HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Last night we played Wii bowling, my 5 year old son bowls with this crazy style (he swings his arm like a windmill) and bowl great.  I have to do it granny style and still can't knock them all down so I decided to try his style.  We have slick wood floors and I was wearing those great fuzzy sock that keep your feet nice and warm.  Well the combination of everything I fell flat on my back, ouch it is sore.

Met McKenzie in SF for a good new year day run at 8 a.m.  The temps were mild, but we got some nasty wind at the end, I would say 40-50 mile per hour.  It was about knocking us over.  But we still were laughing so I would say we had a good time.

Birthday girl, what do you think about tomorrow's run? Are you still up for the 630am start time on the roads? And which rec center meeting place, Orem or PG? Wasn't sure from your last comment. OR are you wanting to go somewhere else? Let me know.

From JulieC on Fri, Jan 01, 2010 at 21:00:51 from 71.35.217.163

PS I was more sore from playing a couple of rounds of Wii bowling than I was from my 20 miler last month.

Met JulieC at the OFC for a long run, we thought the weather was going to be bad so we were going to run half outside and half in but it wasn't so we did it all outside.   We headed down to the river path and went up the canyon.  The path was plowed with just a dusting of snow on it and some patches of black ice but for the most part it was nice.  The first 10 were just at an easy pace and then we picked it up with the last 4 being at marathon pace (low 7's).  Felt a lot better than I thought I would, just some aches in the SI's and low back esp. were I fell on it the other day.  Any way a nice way to spend your birthday morning:)

Met Michelle at will's pit stop to do some tempo miles.  We ran 2 miles up to the mouth of the canyon for a warm up and started into a two mile tempo.  We did these running one up the canyon and one down the canyon with a 2 minute break.  I was not feeling great for the workout.  first set stayed with Michelle with a 7:08 & 7:01, I didn't feel good.  the second set I didn't stay with Michelle and was thinking I should be able to be she is a great runner and the uphill mile was hard for me did these in 7:47 & 7:10.  The next set I just ran easy on the up and turned before Michelle got to me and pushed the mile with her for a 6:40.  Felt better on this but it was down the canyon.

I see a lot of people write threshold miles down. What exactly are they? Good run Josse. Even when its tough you are still getting out there. Hope you are sleeping better.

From Karin on Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 10:40:38 from 70.192.133.60

threshold runs of 5 to 20 minutes at a pace just a little slower than your 10-K racing pace. Threshold pace is roughly equivalent to what exercise physiologists call “lactate threshold,” or the point at which your muscles start fatiguing at a rapid rate. Running at or near lactate threshold is believed to raise your lactate threshold, which should allow you to run faster in the future.

I feel so chubby and out of shape.... really I am just pregnant (12 weeks) but I still feel that way.  I ran a short run and went to my midwife, heard the heartbeat which was such a sweet sound:)  Running has been ok, i do feel sick a lot but feel the best when I run.  I am slowing though.

From josse on Thu, Mar 18, 2010 at 19:13:36 from 75.231.207.143

Paul the best thing for tendonitis is scraping, you have probably heard me talk about that before. The next best things are massage and ice/heat therapy were you do 6-8 mins of ice followed by heat for the same amount of time at least 2 times and as many times as you can do it durning the day. Do this until the tendonitis is gone.

From RAD on Tue, Apr 20, 2010 at 18:37:20 from 67.172.229.125

Josse, how far along will you be? If your doc clears you for it and you feel good, I think you'd be okay. Maybe not great, but okay. For me, I just have to remember to push aside runner's mentality of 'push through pain' and listen to my body. The biggest issues my doc has talked to me about is dehydration and joint injury. The marathon will push your dehydration levels, so you'd REALLY have to watch that and take it easy when needed (and probably make more potty stops than you're used to). I guess dehydration can induce labor, so that is the biggest worry. The joint injury would just be training, since tendons and ligaments are relaxed during pregnancy it increases that risk. But, if your training is there, then it shouldn't be a problem.

You are MUCH more experienced with pregnant running, but that is my two cents. I think running the 1/2 is much less stressful and worrisome. To be honest, I'm jealous that you can even consider doing the full right now. I wasn't even 'back to walking' from my SF at 19 weeks! You are an amazing lady!! Being pregnant and running is such a different mind set for me it's REALLY hard not to try and push myself. Keep up all your hard work and be smart - it's your body and you know it best!

From josse on Tue, Apr 20, 2010 at 21:56:05 from 75.231.113.149

Rad-I have always been against running a marathon while pregnant, esp. for me because I do have a tendency to dehydrated. Plus my hubby is totally against it. I did call the marathon office and they told me I couldn't switch, they stopped doing that at the end of feb. But I did send them an e-mail back then and told her that. She said she would look into it and get back with me.

I just miss it and want to run one. I think a half will have to be good enough.

From JulieC on Tue, Apr 20, 2010 at 21:57:38 from 71.35.248.218

There is only one woman I know that actually runs almost as fast pregnant as not. Melanie was ONLY 1 minute after me when she ran Speedy Spaniard in 2008 39 wks pregnant with a time of 46 minutes. and she ran the Antelope 32 miler 24 wks pregnant. Seriously, she even beat me at 37 weeks pregnant at the freedom run. Granted I wasn't as in shape as this year or last but a very pregnant lady passing me is about all I can take : D. Josse, you know Melanie, her body never got sick pregnant. She was like superwoman pregnant. You and I are the very similar pregnant, nausea gross feeling and massive tiredness...Soooooo you are doing sooooooo well right now. A half is sooo doable for you just nice and easy 9 minute pacer. : D I bet they'd switch you races.

Maybe the calves thing is a pregnant thing. I've struggled with them a LOT! I feel like I'm constantly stretching them, but they always ache a bit when I run, and when I'm done. Maybe from the extra weight they're not used to?

Either way, nice miles lady!! I hope I get to see you at Ogden this weekend...I don't think I can keep up with you, but maybe I'll catch you at the finish. We need to find a way for Luz and Ericka to get on those buses!

Hi Josse!! So far so good. Getting ready to enjoy yourself down Ogden canyon? Can't wait to hear you cheering at the finish line. Still don't know if I am going up Friday or Saturday. If I go up Sat. I will have Mckenzie pick up my number since she is running the marathon. I will be traveling alone again. My kids have a big dance rehearsal and their soccer games. Felt really good for this race.  Started with Ericka, Luz, and Rachael and ran the first 2 pretty easy.  Once I got to the damn I was on my own and felt really good so I just let myself flow down the hill.  Felt a little tired on the parkway but was able to maintain a good pace.  Pubic bone is sore know which means I probably will be cutting these half marathons out, but we will see.  Apparently I had quite the little following, I had the words baby on board on the back of my shirt, and several people told me they used me for a pacer.  I also noticed when I passed people they would speed up for a bit and pass me back, just can't let the pregnant lady beat ya (most of them I would pass back).

I absolutely loved this half.

8:50, 8:51, 8:10, 8:14, 7:46, 8:03, 8:16, 8:08, 7:49, 7:39, 8:20, 8:13, 8:12

Didn't stop my watch so not sure on the last .1 but I was passin people.  This time matches my slowest  non-pregnant half:)

Watched the marathon finishers for a long while and then had get back to our hotel for checkout.  It is so fun to be able to see the full marathoners finish.

That race was so much fun, I am so glad we were able to share some moments. Luz I loved running around the dam and when you pointed out the bird in the sky (was it a hawk or eagle? i am having pregnancy brain and can't remember). I think this is a perfect half, can't wait to run it next year and see how much faster I am.

From LuzyLew on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 12:33:36 from 208.187.197.42

It was a hawk. My Dad loved birds, owls and hawks especially. After he died, I started noticing them out on my runs more and more. So whenever I see one, it makes me feel like he's still out there watching over me and reminding me to be strong & smart (like a hawk, a hunting bird). I only ever see them when I run. So when there was just one bird in the sky, a hawk, flying above us in the race I thought it was special. Kinda like introducing you to my dad...

Ran a total of 5.5 but had my walking warmup and some other walking in there of .5 miles.  Very tired at first but felt better esp. once i started heading down the canyon.  Started at wills with brune, let him get in the river because it was to hot out for him.  Broke out in hives after and my eyes are killing me, stupid allergies.

To run the half or not that is the question, I want to do it but I know if I do I will be super sore in the pubic bone again.  That pain has gone away, which means I won't be running for a while or not at all until after the baby is born.  I don't know why I have this pull to do it, I know I will be slow, I don't even have a # but can get a ride to the start.  On the other hand I really would like to see the super fasty's at the finish.  Oh geez what to do?

I can say I understand this one! This is how I felt with my Memorial Day 1/2 marathon. I really wanted to, but was worried 'body' wise. I don't have the pubic pain like you do, but I knew it would take a toll. However, I also knew that if I didn't do it I would feel SO cheated in the end!! THAT was what finally pushed me - thinking about how I would feel AFTER the race.

Volunteering is a GREAT option and would provide you the running outlet w/out the pain, but if you know you'll regret it in the end (even knowing the pain you'll have to endure) do what your heart tells you.

That's my 2 cents - for what it's worth!

My last run...bitter sweet for me.  I look forward to the day I can run again.... until then I will enjoy you in my dreams.

Josse, I was sad you had to leave before I could crawl back to the finish. Thank you so much for marking the trail and setting out the markers. I'm sorry my brain doesn't work late at night and we had to walk so many miles to find the 10K marker, but I loved it. It was quite an adventure and my daughter is still talking about it. You have earned her respect and admiration forever. I'm just sorry you got blisters. You looked radiant in your running skirt this morning. Come take a walk with me one of these evenings. You're not giving up running forever, but you can still be outside enjoying nature. Thanks again for everything....

I am not feeling good in the mornings, I think it is due to being pregnant.  No really I think it is due to having low blood pressure.  I feel like I am at the end of training for a marathon, were you just want to be done with the training and get on with the marathon.  I just want to be done with this pregnancy, I really don't like it.  But will endure, what else can I do.

Felt better today, everything I read about low blood pressure in pregnancy tells you to drink lots of fluids.  I would think a gallon a day would be enough but I decided to focus on fluid intake first thing instead of eating a huge breakfast to get lots of protein.  I drank 1/2 liter of water and 1/2 liter of Heed first thing and only ate some greek yogurt.  I definitely felt better.

I took Brune for a walk this morning, I actually did a jog/walk thing.  Brune thinks walking is for the dogs and I just don't get that much cardio for it unless i am going up hill.  I decided I would try and see how it felt to jog (cause I am not fast enough to run) a small ways and then walk some.  It felt fine and probably jogged at least half the distance.  I was so secretly enjoying myself, but we will see how the pubic bone handles it tomorrow.  It feels fine so far.

Are the pelvic tilts to help prepare you for the birthing process?

From josse on Fri, Aug 13, 2010 at 21:45:59 from 75.220.99.32

Yes, you do them on your hand and knees and arch your back towards the ceiling. This helps keep the core strong and can also help get the baby in the correct position for birthing. It really helps my back, I have done more core stuff this pregnancy and not had the back issues i usually have.

Heather my midwife started a natural induction starting at 5 p.m. (I had had 8 hours of labor 2 day earlier and was already dilated to a 3).  After about an hour of mild birthing waves me and Wade went for a walk to get things moving, I did some jogging on the grass too.  After about an hours of this I was dilated to a 4 so I stuck a breast pump on to try and get them to last a little longer.   I did this and watch Princess Bride, this got me going to a 5  and then she broke my water at 9:00 p.m.  Wade went and got some Carls Jr. and I ate a chicken sandwich.   At this point my birthing wave got really strong and I went into hypnobabies mode.  I was able to stay calm and under control using hypnobabies, all though I still felt some level of pain, but my mind wouldn't let me go there and I was able to relax and stay calm.  I got into the tub a little after 10 p.m. and was having birthing wave on top of birthing wave, but still using hypnobabies and some sort of moaning to keep calm and under control.  I quickly started to feel pushy but thought there was no way I have dialated enough to push.  But after Heather said I sounded pushy and checked me and sure enough I was ready, this was around 10:48 p.m.  After 1 big push and about 4 smaller one Cole was born in the tub at 10:56 p.m.  It was harder for me keep my light switch turned to the center for pushing but still felt like it went way better than my last one.  I was so happy with my birthing experience even know it was not completely pain free.  Hypnobabies helped my mind and body stay calm and aloud my birth and pushing to be short and to the point.  I would use it again as well as Heather and the birthing center if I were to do this again, kind of sad I'm not.

Gave life to one child on the 29th and had to save the life of  another on the 30th.  First thing first, had Cole Logan Tobiasson on the 29th at 10:56 p.m.  He was 7lb. 11 oz. 21 in.  Had a nice short hypnobabies labor followed by a nice short waterbirth.  Came home around 2:30 that morning.  Sent my kids to school, Jade was fine when I sent her.  When she came home on the bus they told me she was having a hard time.   To make a very long story short, she stopped breathing and I had give her mouth to mouth and was shipped to the hospital via ambulance.  She is doing well know but they still have her their.  She has a plural infution and they are making sure it doesn't get worse.  Baby is doing very well and mommy is very tired.

Holy Moly! I think it took me about 5 minutes to pick my jaw up off the floor after reading this! What a CRAZY 24 hours you had to endure...and are still continuing to now. I'm glad mommy and baby are doing well (a BIG CONGRATS for a super nice short birth and healthy baby and getting home and back at it within the hour :) ). I also hope that your little girl is okay, how scary to have to give your child mouth to mouth! My prayers are with you all!!

Jade is recovering fast and glad to be home, they ruled out the plural effusion my doing a ct scan and are just calling a pneumonia. So glad cause they would have had to put in a chest tube and she would have had to stay a lot longer in the hospital. But know my little guy is got such bad jaundice they are saying he might have to go in. We have him under the lights and will re-test his blood in the morning to see if they are dropping, so hopefully they are or I will have another in the hospital. His # was 20.5 just in case you are wondering.

My intensions were to take friday off and do something today, but after being up with my baby most of the night I decided to sleep for my exercise.  I will count it as a long run:)  I have decided I can't eat sugar esp. chocolate because it really seems to bother my little one.  I am pretty sure that is why he was up and crying most of the night.  I ate chocolate ice cream twice yesterday and I am noticing a pattern.  When I eat sweets he is more fussy.  So no more for me:(

I went out with Brune and the baby to try some walk/jogging stuff.  I felt better than last week but pubic bone is still sore, but I expect it to be sore for the next 2 years.  Thats how long I could feel it after my last kid.  I still feel like I need to take it pretty easy so mostly will stick to the elliptical until it heals some more.

I have 17lbs. to lose, it's coming off:)  Goal weight by next spring (pre-pregnancy weight) is 125.  Right now I am 142 so I have lost 22lbs.

30 mins on the elliptical, stretching

Went to Dr. Brady today for my sore pubic bone, apparently I have torn all the tendons that attach to the pubic bone and won't be running for a good 6-12 weeks.  Luckily I am use to not running so it won't be that bad.  Although I really want to run but will not because I don't want to prolong my recovery.  But I can do non-impact exercises so I will just shoot for 30-60 mins of cardio 5 days a week.   Oh and by the way the work was more painful than non-medicated labor was.  I am glad I didn't have to go through 6 hours of that.

Wow, how crazy. I'm glad that the doc was able to figure it out and that you didn't try to just run through it. I'm truly a believer in cross training. It keeps your cardio enough to be able to jump right back into the running when you're ready. Enjoy that sweet baby boy of yours and when your body is ready, come show us all who is boss! :)

What work did you do that was worse than labor? Someone asked me if labor was like a marathon, I think marathons are worse - well, maybe just less rewarding. Those beautiful babies really make you forget how horrible it was. Medals are nice, but just not the same.

Nice work on that weight! With running so much I've honestly been a little scared when I start to see the scale go down, because I want to make sure I can continue to nurse well. So, I've been eating like crazy and not paying attention to weight. I think I'm developing some bad habits that will come back to bite me when I'm ready for all this to come off!

Went to Dr. Brady's yesterday and got some more injection this helped so much last time.  He said I felt 75%better form last time.  He also said I need to slowly but surly start transitioning back into running and strengthen my core.  I think this will take me a while though cause I feel weak in my lower abs still.  I plan to work into it over the next 6 weeks.

I went for a 1.25 mile walk can feel it but it doesn't hurt and I felt good after.  I also did a core workout and weights upper.

Started today with 30 mins on the elliptical.  Debated whether to go out and take my baby in the cold and wind.  The wind died down so I went out felt good too, at least lots better than last week went a total of 4.3 with 2.5 of it running.  Started with .25 of walking and then 1 mile running .2 walk, 1 mile running .2 walk and .5 running then I made myself just walk the rest even know I want to run more.  didn't want to over do it.   My pace while running is about 9-10:30 min mile,  I know smokin.  I am not going to focus on running quite yet just do what I can.  Nursing my baby and my sleep as well as my babies is more important than running at this point.  I refuse to wake my baby up when he is sleeping so good to nurse him so I can run and I am afraid to go out cause he won't take a bottle, plus running full is not fun.  So for the time being I will just get out when I can, it may be in the evening which I hate but I will not focus on it.  But it does feel good that I can run if I so choose.

Started with 30 mins on the elliptical and then went out with brune and the baby in the jogger for a run and some walking.  Decided after running this that I am not ready to run,  although I am feeling good in the pubic bone my sciatic and left hammy are bothering me.  And after seeing Jason S. again for the muscle realignment I think I really need to work on my flexibility and get myself pain free first.  This make me sad but I am not in running shape any way so what will a little more time off hurt.  I plan to really work on doing yoga and see what that does for me, if that doesn't help along with the muscle realignment than I am just doomed and will probably never run pain free again.  I also need to re-teach myself to walk and run Jason says this is the cause of my pain and sciatic problem,  I need to walk more relaxed with my toes facing just slightly out.  He says I need to lengthen my stride and land more heel to toes (which goes against what I thought before but after working with me I see why this works for me better).  So here goes my new adventure in trying to come back to running.

You mean the Gua sha tools yes but I am learning that our muscles and the way our bodies are out of alignment are the key to overly tight muscles.

From Burt on Wed, Dec 01, 2010 at 15:02:52 from 206.19.214.144

Yes, that's it. I was thinking geisha and gaucho. Neither one of those was right. Anyway, my hammy has been bothering me for a long time now. And I would think there's been times that I've given it enought time to heal. I don't know. Maybe not.

From RAD on Wed, Dec 01, 2010 at 16:16:13 from 67.172.229.125

Oh how I LOVE yoga! Glad you got some lax time in.

Have you done chiropractor stuff for the alignment, or just the guy you've been going to recently? I've wondered the same thing (alignment questions) with my calf issues lately.

From josse on Wed, Dec 01, 2010 at 17:59:56 from 75.196.142.216

Yes I have done chiro for years and think it helps but the muscles are so tight they just pull thing out again.

Started the day with 35 mins of yoga, arms sore from yesterdays yoga.  Then did 30 mins on the bike medium and it was such a nice day (42 degrees and sunny blue skies) so I took the dog for a walk.  Hammy and sciatic feel good.

Went for a walk today and tried to run for a half mile, I felt ok running but it tightens my hammy right back up.  I am not sure what to do?  I am tired of spending money on myself for this.  And as long as I just crosstrain it seem fine but I want to run.  Maybe just more patience or maybe I will never be a runner again.  20 mins of yoga.

Hang in there kiddo, you'll get there! sometimes the running gods like to try our patience;) Cross-training is a good way to keep fitness if it doesn't drive you crazy!;) Strength training has seemed to help me a lot the last few months maybe you should give it a try.

I know, and most of the time I am okay with it and am really enjoying my little Cole. I am sure my body took a beating form my pregnancy and delivery. I do strength training as well as power yoga, my strength is returning but not as fast as it has in the past. I am blaming a lot of this on age;) I WILL be back.

40 mins on elliptical and 25 on bike.  weights upper and yoga for 18 mins.  it has now been about 6 months with out running and I am really missing it and wondering when I will be able to run again, I am not ready to throw in the towel yet.  But my sciatic/hammy is not getting better.  I have notices a little bit of improvement with the yoga and scraping every other day but it is slow going.  I am going to try to run on the zero drop shoes and see if that helps and if I am not running by mid Jan. then I will get injections in the butt and hammy.  In the mean time I will just continue what I am doing.

Noticed my baby has 2 teeth.  This is way before my other two kids got teeth.

weight 137 was glad to see I didn't pack on any extra holiday pounds.
