I am married with 3 lovely children 26, 18, &12and a dog named Koda and a cat named Blue.  Love to run and be outside.  I believe that if you think you can do it and you work hard enough any thing is possible.   Life flashes by in the blink of an eye, enjoy it while it last and remember there is a lot more to life than running. I coach high school swim and love it!

I am so happy to be done with the apple cleanse.  I feel pretty good today, my usual headache is not so noticeable.  I was thinking to myself I was excited to go out and run but then I remebered I was taking the whole week off.  My back does feel pretty good.  No deep soreness, I don't know if that is from the cleanse or just not running.   I just biked today 30 mins.  I am not sure if I would do this cleanse again.  It was torcher, it wouldn't have been so bad except for making meals for my family.  I did try and take the half cup of olive oil and made it one swallow and could tell I was going to through up if I drank and more, so I took the rest in fish oils because they are much easier to down for me.

Final weight-117.5

eek I am really scared about this crazy diet thing you are on! Does this "Dr. Brady" have credentials? Because this is really starting to sound scary! I guess on plus side it's a quick way to lose weight?

From josse on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 14:57:04

Dr. Brady didn't tell me to do the cleanse just take a week or two off for my back. I got the idea to do the cleanse from Paul. I don't think he lost weight like I did and I am sure I will put it back on in the next week.

From paul on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 14:58:57

I about threw up too. I managed 1/4 cup. Took some fish oil later on too. I just we think alike.

Benn - don't wet your pants. There's nothing to be scared about. It's no different than a juice fast or other mono food fast. The idea is that you fool your body into fasting mode, your liver starts dumping toxins, and then they all get flushed out and you feel healthier afterward. Sometimes you have to take a step backwards in order to move forward.

And for the record, fasting is a terrible way to lose weight. Or guess I should say a terrible idea. But weight loss is not the goal.

From The Howling Commando on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 14:59:12

Okay well i hope you put the weight back on! That's crazy. I like food way too much to do something like that. If anything I would think not eating would hurt your body more?

From The Howling Commando on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:00:08

Would it be possible to do a bagel cleanse? I want to just take like 5 leaps forward so I can race again!

From paul on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:04:20

Benn - I imagine eating nothing but bagels would make you constipated. Far from cleansing.

Perhaps you should try a coffee enema instead. That way you'll get all the benefits of a detox without having to change your diet.

Let me know how it goes! :0

From josse on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:05:42

I remeber Michelle eating alot of bagels before the marathon and her saying it didn't help her. I would think you would put on weight with that kind of cleanse. Just take it nice and slow and you will race again.

And for the record I don't like weighing this little.

From josse on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:06:42

Paul that was what I was thinking as well.

From The Howling Commando on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:07:08

Funny. Not. I am not a retard. I know what enemas are Paul :-p. I'm not going to try anything like that for sure!

From Phoenix on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:14:37

What evidence is there that fasting causes the liver to dump toxins?

From The Howling Commando on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:15:59

I guess they do chemical tests or something?

I was wondering the same thing. Is it more of a psychological benefit?

From Phoenix on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:19:52

I would like to know what the chemical tests are and what toxins are detected.

From The Howling Commando on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:22:42

maybe it's like a pregnancy test? like test before and (+) positive for it and then after you are (-) negative!

From josse on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:30:48

I would think the evidence would be in the way you feel when you do it. Do you know of any evidence Paul?

From paul on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:39:30

Honestly? I read it somewhere. I can't quote a specific source, so I guess Phoenix wins this round. But it certainly does help my arthritis pain and inflammation levels, that I can attest to.

Benn - Well, I thought I was being pretty funny. Surely you chuckled at least a little? I mean, think about it: coffee. enema. That's one cup of Joe I don't want!

From josse on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:41:43

I got a good laugh out of it.

From The Howling Commando on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 15:41:56

Yeah it was pretty funny, but man I think that just ruined coffee for me for a bit, well at least until the coffee is done brewing. I need a 12 step program. I probably drink 2-3 pots a day :(

From Phoenix on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 16:18:22

There is a fair amount of evidence for fasting reducing inflammation (increased cortisol, etc). Fasting also protects mitochondria and slows the aging clock (google "caloric restriction sirtuins"). So, to feel better after doing so makes sense. I don't think fasting works by clearing toxins.

From MichelleL on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 16:29:47

For the record, "how you feel when you do it" is not valid evidence. It could be placebo effect, like a sugar pill doctors used to give out. I'd rather take a sugar pill though than to fast.

Bagel cleanse = constipation. Yeah, I can attest to that.

From josse on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 16:31:26

There is alot of articles you can find on this 3 day apple cleanse if you google that you will find many. This one talks about clearing toxins form the body http://www.astrodreamadvisor.com/Body_Apple_Fast.html

From MichelleL on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 16:33:21

Well the full name of the website inspires confidence in the source - he he he!!!

From josse on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 16:33:26

By the way Michelle you feel awful when you do it. Usually when you talk about the placebo effect you are talking about something making you feel good. It is after when you feel better.

From josse on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 16:36:12

http://www.health-science-spirit.com/HF1-3.html this is another one. Although if you don't beleive in the holistic approach it all sound kooky.

From The Howling Commando on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 16:37:25

Well if I was really that concerned about "feeling better" I would just start eating healthfully and stop eating all the junk food I eat :) I'll let my times and stuff suffer a bit to be able to eat some "junk food" now and again. I think Sasha's link about injury prevention is a little strict, saying that even occasional use of junk food will hurt you :( As long as I am running 6 miles a day I don't think it'll hurt me.

From marion on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 16:41:15

Most of the evidence about cleansing is anecdotal. But like the placebo effects of many things, it just goes to show that the mind is a powerful healing tool, even if there is not proof of actual molecular effects or benefits :)

Asside from the constipation, a bagel cleanse sounds a bit more appetizing! ;)

From Phoenix on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 16:42:37

Thanks for the link. Honestly though after reading it, I thinks its pseudoscience.

Here is a link to pubmed:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez

Pubmed is the definitive research database for biomedical research. I searched for "apple fast liver toxins" and returned zero hits.

In contrast search for "caloric restriction inflammation" returned 82 hits.

From josse on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 16:50:13

That is a good link. Thanks

I also think the power of the mind is quite great. I tried this because I was in alot of pain and it has seemed to help Paul. When you are in pain for along time you will almost try anything. I probably could have got the same results for just taking time off. But it also was a good test in mind control. Something I am trying to do. I would like to try to fly through mind contol someday then I could finish a marathon super fast;)

From paul on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 17:08:18

Good info about the inflammatory control. I have an inflammatory auto-immune disease, so it makes sense in that regard that I have less pain and more mobility after an apple fast.

And hey, if I can get complete remission with a placebo, I'll keep taking it! It's true that when you are in constant pain you stop caring why things work, and are more concerned with results than reasons.

From Phoenix on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 17:18:36

The power of the mind is amazing. The placebo effect is the only single "remedy" that can positively effect all diseases.

Also, for emphasis, I'm not saying the fast won't help you independent of the placebo effect.
